Sakhalin State University was established as a teacher training institution in 1949 and became Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk State Education Institute in 1954. In 1998, it becameSakhalin State University as a major higher education institution in Sakhalin region. Sakhalin State University consists of distinctive institutions such as Institute of Natural Science and Technosphere Safety, Institute of Psychology and Pedagogics, Institute of Philology, History and Oriental Studies, Technical Oil and Gas Institute and Institute of Law, Economics and Management.
The policy of educational quality is the basis of the sustainable development of the University. Its main principle is continuous professional education of students and academic staff. The academic staff treats the history of their university with respect, honor, preserving and developing the teaching and educational traditions as well as the scientific traditions of their predecessors. At the same time, they find modern and up-to-date approaches to meet the challenges facing higher education in the 21st century.
All the programs are implemented in Russian, there’s also a possibility of obtaining pre-training course of Russian language in the framework of the “Russian as a foreign language” program, after which students are given a certificate of Russian language proficiency for further professional activities in the Russian Federation or organization of activities with Russian partners.

City Information

City Overview One hour flight from New Chitose Airport to Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk is provided five times a week.
There’s Sakhalin Regional Museum that has been recently renovated on the former site of Japanese building. Highly recommended to visit!
The “Hokkaido Center” is located near the entrance of Gagarin Park and is cooperating with urban development projects such as Japanese-Russian culture, sports exchange, and building technology.
