Over the last 3 years, there has been a visible increase in the number of tourists coming from China, South Korea, Mongolia, France and Germany. Numerous tourist agencies, hotels, transport enterprises and other organizations provide tourist services. There are about 4,500 historical and cultural monuments in Irkutsk. Irkutsk is famous for its wooden architecture. Universities, public libraries, theatres and museums are in the city.
It is also called “Paris of Siberia” because of the beautiful cityscape that was influenced by Europe. There are few buildings, and low-rise buildings line the main street. You can see many traditional wooden buildings. There are many kinds of restaurants, café and they serve Russian, European and Buryat (Mongolian) dishes.
The famous Lake Baikal area is 46 times larger than Lake Biwa, and is the oldest lake on earth, its age is estimated at 25-30 million years ago. Lake Baikal is the largest freshwater lake by volume in the world, containing roughly 20% of the world’s unfrozen surface fresh water.
